On March 20th, Anchor Bay Entertainment proudly brings the Battle Royale: The Complete Collection to Blu-ray™ and DVD for the first time in North America. 42 students, Three days, One survivor -- No Escape. Welcome to the world of Battle Royale! BATTLE ROYALE In the near future, the economy has collapsed, unemployment has soared and juvenile crime has exploded. Fearful of their nation's youth, the Japanese government passes The BR Law: Each year, a 9th grade class is sent to a remote island where they will be locked into exploding neck collars, given a random weapon, and forced to hunt and kill each other until there is only one survivor left. Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill) and screen legend Takeshi Kitano (Boiling Point ...

Battle Royale (Director's Cut Collector's Edition)

With the Japanese currently leading the way in thought-provoking cinematic violence, it's only fitting that Kinji Fukasaku's Battle Royale is being touted as a Clockwork Orange for the 21st century. Based on the novel by Koshun Takami, the film opens with a series of fleeting images of unruly Japanese schoolchildren, whose bad behavior provides a justification for the "punishments" that will ensue. Once the prequel has been dispensed with, the classmates are drugged and awaken on an island where they find they have been fitted with dog collars that monitor their every move. Instructed by their old teacher ("Beat" Takeshi) with the aid of an upbeat MTV-style video, they are told of their fate: after an impartial lottery they have been chosen to fight each other in a three-day, no-rules contest, the "Battle Royale." Their only chance of survival is through the death of all their classmates.

Some pupils embrace their mission with zeal, while others simply give up or try to become peacemakers and revolutionaries. However, the ultimate drive for survival comes from the desire to protect the one you love. Battle Royale works on many different levels, highlighting the authorities' desperation to enforce law and order and the alienation caused by the generation gap. Whether you consider the film an important social commentary or simply watch it for the adrenaline-fueled violence, this is set to become cult viewing for the computer game generation and beyond. --Nikki Disney

Customer Evaluations

I got this game for my oldest's 9th birthday. He is 100% in the Lego phase and loves the Lego City kits. He got a couple of those for his birthday and disappears into his room for hours until they are accomplished. I went looking for a gift and saw this and gave it a attempt. The 1st element of the entertaining was putting it together, just like any other Lego set. The rules take a couple of minutes to figure out, but just after that it is a extremely entertaining game. Generally each player (up to 4) is a Ninja and they work together to search all the guardhouses on the board to uncover the Golden Weapons. Some guardhouses have golden weapons, some have gray tokens which brings a guard to your space. When that takes place, you have to spin the spinner and if you get the color of your ninja or any other ninja that is in the space, you defeat the guard. If you shed, the Common goes down 1 step. Once the Common goes down all the methods he captures one of your Golden Weapons. There is also a cool rubberized dice to roll, which moves the ninjas around the board. There is also a ninja rope (can't don't forget the actual name) that the ninja can use to swing to a distant guardhouse.
The truth that the board is Legos, and is three-dimensional, and the Lego figures move about on the Lego board, tends to make it incredibly cool. My nine year old and his almost eight year old brother have had a blast playing. As a Mom I like the reality that the players are not competing against each other, but rather are on the exact same team, trying to get all the golden weapons ahead of the "General" gets down the steps. Fun stuff, and enough to keep this age group interested. Also, the game appears to be just the perfect length, not too lengthy so the youngsters lose interest but extended enough. Accurate confession, I like playing as well.
Only word of warning is preserve the game away from tiny brothers, mainly because just tonight my three year old chewed on a golden weapon, rendering its appearance unacceptable to the game's owner. So I've written to Lego by way of their webpage, I do not know what they do about replacing itty bitty parts that get lost or destroyed by little brothers, but I'm hoping they will send out a new one particular, goodness knows we've spent adequate dollars on Legos in the past couple of years.

Outstanding birthday present for a 12 yr old boy. He loves to construct the board just before he plays the board game.

Client Critiques

In his violent, controversial first novel, Koushun Takami takes us to the Republic of Greater East Asia, a contemporary, fictional, essentially fascist empire that contains Japan and China, but not Korea. Among the stranger forms of abuse beneath this oppressive regime is the Plan, a compulsory game that pits a group of teenagers against one yet another until there is only one particular survivor. Ostensibly begun as a sort of tactical experiment, every single year the Plan destroys 50 junior high school classes of 15-year-olds for no clear objective. This is the story of a single of those classes. 42 students, 21 male, 21 female, are offered weapons and confined to an island. There, they should kill each and every other till there is one winner, or all perish should really they refuse.
"Battle Royale" is commonly compared to William Golding's 1954 novel "Lord of the Flies". The two books are superficially rather similar: They each concern a group of youths on a island fighting for their lives. They are each allegories, but of several issues. "Lord of the Flies" illustrates the baser instincts that are commonly hidden beneath a thin veneer of civilization. It is to some degree a mockery of British society as the author saw it at the time. "Battle Royale" is explicitly anti-fascist, but due to the fact it is doesn't have an audience living below fascism, that's not meaningful in itself. The book's fascism seems to be an allegory for the a lot more rigid elements of Japanese culture and its educational method. It is potential to interpret the book as anti-capitalist, but I've no idea if that was intended. I do think it implicitly criticizes expectations that modern day families quite often have for their youngsters, and I suspect that bourgeois American youth will empathize more with this facet of the book than with those themes which apply a great deal more specifically to Japan.
I understand why young folks like "Battle Royale". But it wasn't exclusively young many people who produced the book a bestseller in Japan. It really is an entertaining novel with an fascinating premise for older folks as well. Truthfully, its themes are not as nicely-executed as "Lord of the Flies", but "Battle Royale"'s characters, interpersonal relationships, and motivations are alot more intricately drawn. And this is what makes it a page-turner. The bloodbath isn't so shocking as the idea that gruesome violence is inevitable. We get to know these characters. We witness well-intentioned men and women do horrible factors. After a whilst the reader comes to see the hopelessness of the scenario and realizes that individuals genuinely would murder their classmates, even if they had not set out to do so.
When I started reading "Battle Royale", I doubted my ability to preserve track of 42 plus characters, all with unfamiliar Japanese names. But I did not have any difficulty at all remembering who was who. Author Koushun Takami deserves a lot of credit for focusing our attention on exceptional attributes of each and every character and organizing the book to overcome confusion. The number of students left remaining is announced at the finish of each and every chapter. This assists the reader keep track of what is going on and emphasizes the narrative's -and the Program's- matter-of-fact tone.
The only glaring fault that I can discover with Takami's writing is the dialogue. The students' dialogue appears awkward and remedial. As I know absolutely nothing about the Japanese language, I can not tell if this is negative writing or a trouble with the translation. Apart from that, the text is fluid and hassle-free to read. Don't be place off by the book's length. It's a genuine page-turner. I under no circumstances at any point tired of reading. I was at all times anxious to discover out who would live or die in the subsequent chapter. Creepy but true. Sustaining the readers' curiosity for more than 600 pages is an admirable accomplishment. "Battle Royale" is an impressive very first novel. It really is enjoyable for young and aging alike. 4 1/2 stars.

"Battle Royale" is a gripping, intense socio-political novel in the tradition of "Brave New Planet" and "1984." When initial hearing the subject matter, a government-sponsored game where a Jr. High School class ought to kill every single other until only a single remains, it seems sensationalistic and additional action-thriller than believed-provoker. Nonetheless, there is far way more hear than ultra-violence and simplistic teenage slaughter.
1st, the writing is brilliant, combing the subtlety of classical Japanese literature with the aggression and confrontation of European/American political literature. Every of the 40 students are men and women, with distinctive motivations and personalities. There are no throw-away scenes or off-screen deaths, and each and every student's demise is made to feel intimate and very important. Each life matters.
Second, the troubles dealt with are legion, from the conformity of Japanese schools to the insane bureaucracy and immobility of the Japanese political system. Along with this are alot more personal difficulties of loyalty, pain and loss. "Battle Royale" is a thick book, with a lot packed inside. I would imagine that those far more fluent in modern Japanese politics and social problems would grasp some of the subtler messages, but there is still a thing right here for everybody.
A minor complaint is that the students act absolutely nothing like Jr. High School students, particularly not Japanese ones. Maybe this is how they would like to be, but there are a few as well lots of "super-heroes" amongst them, a a couple of as well few crybabies. In spite of this, as this is an alternate-reality setting, maybe in the "Battle Royale" world youngsters develop up a little faster.

Distributed by WMG Battle Royale, the first track from The Word Alive's debut EP "EMPIRE" out now on Fearless Records. iTunes: bit.ly Battle Royale Lyrics: Breathe! They will turn their backs on me unless I decide to breathe. You will forget me unless I breathe.. I've seen the worst in myself tonight. I almost lost the fight. My mind is lost within my dreams. Pinned down, wrapped up, in the arms of sleep. I feel it slowing now. I can barely see my way out. I won't forget. And every single time I see your face it reminds me of why I walked away. I won't forget. And this is how you remind me that when I walked away, I was right to save me from myself. Goodbye, never say I am not enough. I'm scared I've thrown it all away and I'll never be the same. What have they done? What have I become... This is the end of running from you. I promise you that I won't forget. And every single time I see your face it reminds me of why I walked away. I won't forget. And this is how you remind me that when I walked away, I was right to save me from myself. Goodbye, never say I am not enough. Never say never, never say I'm not enough. Never say that I... Never say never, never say I'm not enough. Never say I'm not enough!

Consumer Evaluations

Forty-two youngsters killing each other in the name of survival. That's the fundamental premise of Koushun Takami's cult-novel Battle Royale that has been adapted into the hit manga series by Masayuki Taguchi. The plot sounds beyond insane, the mere mention of the idea nearly offensive, so how on Earth could reading a comic about school children murdering every other be intriguing let alone entertaining? But it is interesting, and additionally, Battle Royale has a way of engrossing the reader into its bloody storyline to a point where it becomes a simple selection to invest in the rest of the series. Ultimately, Battle Royale is a manga series that works on quite a few distinct levels. It is a gripping story, full of romance, lots and lots of brutal action, some extremely detailed artwork, and also disturbing portrayal of human nature.
In an option universe where Japan has turn into apart of the Higher East Asia Republic with an oppressive Big-Brother government, a ninth grade high school class is randomly selected to participate in The Program, a nationally televised reality game show where students are released on an uninhabited island, offered a random weapon and rations, and then let loose with one particular objective: to be the only a single alive. Each student is equipped with an explosive collar which will detonate if no 1 dies inside twenty-four hours, forcing them to fight if they wish to survive. A young boy, Nanahara Shuya, the class' resident rebel-rocker, finds himself in the middle of it, refusing to kill but also bearing the responsibility of protecting Nakagawa Noriko, a female classmate. His vow not to play the game, on the other hand, becomes tested when it becomes apparent that lots of of his classmates are a lot more than willing to kill in order to win. Amongst them are the emotionless Kiriyama and the scarred Mitsuko, each natural born killers who will go to any extent to win, along with a host of other students who give in to their unbridled savage nature when forced to.
The characters of Battle Royale are one particular of the series' strongest points. Great pains are taken to flesh each and every a single out, so that when every a single dies, you really feel some sort of emotion. It could be satisfaction or glee when a rapist meets his gruesome finish or sadness when a single of your favorite characters finally meets their match. No character is genuinely invincible, and as a result the story normally remains intense. From the charismatic hacker Mimura Shinji to the Kung-Fu master Sugimara to the terrified Noriko, Battle Royale presents a assortment of characters that do a great job of reflecting the distinct personalities found in an typical high school. It lends a specific quantity of realism is an otherwise borderline ridiculous setting. At instances, it is virtually painful to watch the story progress as you develop into attached to a great deal more than 1 character, for the reason that in spite of all the nurtured hopes that the students share of escaping, the rules of the System are that only one student lives.
The characters are really what bring out the theme of human nature as well. Some go insane at the prospect of a premature death and willingly turn on each other. Some succumb to their inevitable death and commit suicide, selecting to meet death on their personal terms instead of those of the government. Other people resist the System, teaming up or plotting an insurrection to break cost-free from the government's iron grip. It is through the characters that we see the true nature of ones' personality when faced in the worst of circumstances. It is a disturbing spectacle to behold, and forces the reader to ponder at one particular point or a further "If you had been faced with these circumstances, what would you do?"
But Battle Royale is about even more than just the characters. There are quite a few fierce gun battles such as an extraordinary car chase, explosions, and even a few Dragon Ball styled martial arts fights. In contrast to the movie and novel, the manga version of Battle Royale's action does not necessarily ground itself in reality. The martial art sequences between Sugimara and Kiriyama are a testament to that, with both leaping by way of the air and exchanging blows in a dazzling display that would feels reminiscent of Hong Kong kung-fu films.
The artwork in Battle Royale is rather challenging to specify. It closely emulates the realistic art style of titles like Fists of the North Star for some characters, though for others a more comical strategy is taken. Either way, the character styles are elaborate and anything in the world of Battle Royale is detailed. And when I say everything, I mean quite literally everything. The violence is incredibly graphic and extreme. Brains are blown out, eye balls ripped out, throats slashed open, limbs amputated -it's just about disgusting to watch and can be a nasty shock to those who are not ready for it. Also, the sex is additional or much less pornographic. Pretty small is censored to say the least and these scenes are not isolated incidents. One particular character's weapon is her physique and sexual encounters followed by gruesome deaths happen many instances throughout the series. For those expecting a typical Bleach or Naruto reading, Battle Royale will come as a particularly unpleasant surprise.
The translation is fairly sound for the most element. Done by Keith Giffen, the story flows particularly smoothly and the dialogue fits every single character nicely. The only flaw in it is his occasional insertion of pop-culturist phrases which allude to either movies or musicians. Some fit such as characterizing Shuya as "Elvis", the original rebel rocker, but in other situations it feels awkward. In 1 case, Shuya claims that a different character has a "Bon Jovi" hair cut. In a different, in the course of a gunfight in a vehicle, 1 character tells Shuya not to go "Marvin from Pulp Fiction" when handing him a loaded gun. It makes sense if you are familiar with films and such, but it nonetheless sounds strange.
It is necessary to reemphasize the very important fact that Battle Royale, even though centered on the lives of teens, is not appropriate for young audiences. The parental discretion sticker on the front of the cover is well deserved. The fights are readily as bloody and graphic as any movie (which includes Asian cinema) and far surpasses pretty considerably something in the American manga industry. There is lots of foul language and there is tons of nudity, incredibly explicit sex, allusions to rape, and kid molestation just to name a few of the far more potentially offensive elements of the series. If you walk into reading the manga expecting just a comic form of the movie (which is also highly suggested) you're in for a shock. The film, whilst still incredibly violent, can not even begin to evaluate with the quantity of graphic material in the series. This series is not meant for young audiences (18+ I would recommend) or anybody who may be offended by the list above.
So, if the series is so shockingly violent, how can it be fantastic? I admit some of the violence and sex could be gratuitous, but the shocking nature of the artwork is an integral component of the manga series. It aids in reinforcing the disturbing themes that the comic depicts. With an unbelievable storyline, memorable characters, great action, and exceptionally detailed artwork, if you can stomach its explicit artwork, Battle Royale is an insane ride that you will not want to miss.

If you know anything about this series, you know it's not for the faint of heart. The story takes place in the not-as well-distant future, in Tokyo, Japan. For causes unexpalined in this volume, a "game show" has been introduced into society as a sick sort of entertainment. 42 teens, 21 girls and 21 boys, are pitted against one yet another, and the sole survivor (the 1 who is not killed by his peers) is the winner.
In a planet that is now besieged with numerous reality shows, this extreme game doesn't really feel as far off as it ought to. The graphic content material doesn not horrify me as significantly as the probability of this apocalyptic future.
The artwork is graphic and disturbing, but the characters are still attractive. The most important character's, Shuuya's, childhood flashbacks add to the depressing overtones of the "plan." We see Shuuya laughing and playing as a youngster, and we wonder if the next page will spell doom for that stated buddy.
The story is compelling and you read on as if you happen to be passing by a highway accident you just have to look. This volume is pretty gory and deptressing (but thought provoking.) Is it one thing we have to dread in our future?!?
As for the prior evaluations, this is undoubtedly NOT Appropriate FOR Young children. But then again, it really is written for adults. It comes shrinkwrapped for a cause.
Oh, and typing in all caps does not validate your opinion. But then again, I'd like to say: THANKS TOKYOPOP!

Client Critiques

My son (6 years old) loves this game. It is the one particular that he asks to play most generally. We read the book by L. Keller 1st (though it is not a requirement to play the game). If you do read the book nevertheless, it explains why all of the states are scrambled and why they have to be sent household. The game requires that you can read. You need to have to be in a position to read the name of the state, the state's capital and it really is nickname. Throughout the course of the name you will will need to find, for example, any state in your existing pile, which has a capital which has 3 or significantly more syllables. The player who can locate the state in his/her pile that match the specified criteria initial, can send the state house. The player with the most states sent property at the end of the game wins!

I initially bought this game for my classroom, but I brought it property this summer to play with my kids. I play this game all the time with my 7 year old. It is entertaining for each adults and kids (who can read). My son also has learned the states, an added bonus!

Consumer Critiques

This revised English translation of Koushun Takami's spectacular debut novel could not come at a improved time. It has been out of print from VIZ for a handful of years now, but their new Haikasoru imprint is best for bringing it back. This "notorious, high-octane thriller," presents a gripping story that will stay with you for the rest of your life. It is a straight forward story. A group of 42 high-school students are taken to an evacuated island, offered weapons and a time limit, and forced to kill each and every other till only one particular of them is left standing.
1st off, why is this a have to-get?
1. The translation has been improved. The 1st edition was rife with typographical errors, and a lot more than when a character would be addressed with another's name. I asked the Haikasoru editor personally, and he mentioned the book received a line-by-line edit, so this improved, tidied translation is one thing to be excited about.
2. A 22-page afterword by author Koushun Takami! This will be "his longest published perform because the novel itself," according to the Haikasoru website. His own opinion on the cult status of his own creation is some thing no fan should really miss.
three. A new forward to the novel by Max Allan Collins. The prolific Road to Perdition writer knows a point or two about decent fiction, and there can by no means be also lots of essays about really good novels by fine novelists.
4. Last but not least, an interview with the director of the initially Battle Royale film, Kinji Fukasaku. Sadly, Fukasaku died in 2003, so this will be an old interview, published in English for the initial time. It will be fascinating to know the opinions of this master director, who so perfectly adapted a film for a significantly younger generation than his own.
It is generally mentioned that the most beneficial fiction does not give answers, but rather asks concerns. That is Exactly what this book does. When a single reads it, one particular inevitably asks, "What would I do in this circumstance?" The easy moral dilemma presented in this book will lead not just to introspection, but to some fun, speculative conversations with good friends and family members. I very first read the book six years ago. Immediately after all this time, it still gets brought up in conversation, and it is a testament to the strength of the story that I am nonetheless so excited at present for this new edition. The book does not just excel as a conversation-starter, yet. Attached to the straight forward conflict of the story is a particularly, especially gripping narrative with living, breathing characters. When the psychological examination of a few characters drives the story along the most of the way, the reader is given glimpses into the minds of all 42 students. Far from getting confusing, this essentially draws the reader additional into the story.
New words by the author himself, an interview with the director of the film, and a forward by a modern day master of fiction are 3 factors that could, individually, motivate one to pick up this second edition of Battle Royale. What tends to make this buy a necessity for the fan or new reader, even so, is all of this packaged with a revised translation. When again, if you are a fan of the book, the manga, or the films, this book will prove a great excuse to reacquaint yourself with the franchise.
Personally, I preserve that the novel itself is the most effective way to encounter the story. I believe the author feels that the manga is the best way. Undoubtedly, some would side with the films. Regardless, none of them are anything much less than entertaining. If you are a fan of Battle Royale, pick this up, it will be worth it.
If you are not a fan however, this is, in my opinion, the perfect spot to start out.

I was 1st introduced to "Battle Royale" by a beneficial friend of mine who mentioned I just HAD to watch the movie. It took me a whilst 'cause the film is not distributed in the U.S. and, therefore, is challenging to purchase or rent. Finally, I located it to rent and the film was astounding ... phenomenal! I had bought the book (the novel NOT the manga) a couple of months ago (just before watching the film) but hadn't gotten about to reading it but. Immediately after watching the film, I just HAD to read it and finally picked it up and began reading all 620 pages within a week or so.
All I can say about the book is: it is 10 times better than the movie This book is clever and insane at the same time, producing it a terrific, cannot-place-the-book-down-type of read! As was mentioned in a single of the earlier reviews, you wouldn't believe it'd be simple and easy to keep up with the 42 students but, after a even though, it is. In contrast to the movie (which was especially great for the time they had to preserve it down to), the book is observed through pretty much just about every character's point of view and the action scenes as well as the explanation of injuries and deaths is so well-written and described that you can not assist but wonder what author Koushun Takami is going to write for his subsequent book.
I do have to admit that I'm a enormous Bruce Springsteen fan and since the novel mentions him and quotes a single of his renowned songs for the duration of a essential finish scene of the book, my liking of this book grew hugely! The reality that Takami was in a position to comment on not only young adult matters but also of country politics and economics, pc hacking, fascism and emotional concerns (plus the significance of rock music and its influence) is astounding! All of these issues are addressed within this book with no sounding preachy and complicatedly overdiscussed to the point of boredom. He writes with such expertise and detail of computer system hacking and homemade bomb-generating that it tends to make the reader wonder if he has individual encounter with these issues or not.
Like I mentioned, the reader Definitely gets to know extra of the characters and their emotions in this book, which tends to make it all the more tragic when each come to their demise. Mainly because there are 42 various characters, there are several stories, emotions and thoughts varying of like, hate, sadness, worry, and hope that you see through every individual. Simply because of not only our, but the world's, desensitized views on violence, I assume individuals who read or hear about this book (and see the film) really don't take in the extreme seriousness of the plot: Think about getting to kill your pals (... your most beneficial close friends, for that matter) to survive. Could you do it? Could you in fact reside with memories like that? The thought alone is scary as hell and these 9th grade students have to do just that!
The book is a mix of A Clockwork Orange, Lord of the Flies (Perigee), 1984 (Signet Classics), and Stephen King's The Running Man and The Lengthy Walk all in 1. I've continually been impressed with books, movies or Television shows that are ensemble and concentrate on a group of persons rather than just two or 1 individual(s). And the characters in this are all so wonderfully described that you wonder what would turn into of them or what they would be like if you knew them in actual life. If you wondered why some components of the movie were the way they had been, then read the book and it answers fairly much every thing. There is also a outstanding really like story (without becoming as well mushy) and A lot of action and plot twists. I do have to warn squeamish readers that this book is incredibly descriptive and violent. There aren't genuinely any sexual situations but the violence is plentiful. Like the movie Final Destination (New Line Platinum Series), close to the middle of the first component of the book, you morbidly begin asking yourself how the subsequent student will meet their death. And every death can be seen as a metaphoric failure-in-life given that of that character's character flaw below tension, which would lead to their failure in life mainly because of the usual stresses that life can often bring (i.e. SPOILER -- the young couple commit suicide rather than fight to survive and live their sort of really like has blinded them 'cause they can not think about living with no each and every other). Fear and selfishness are the accurate enemies which lead to death in this story.
The only flaw with the initial edition was considering that it was translated from Japanese to English, there had been at times grammatical errors and words missing but in this edition, they're all improved! Also included that's new to this edition is a forward by Max Allan Collins (The Road to Perdition), an afterword by the author (believe of it almost as a "commentary" on the book), and a interview with the director of the 2000 film, Kinji Fukasaku (The Yakuza Papers - Battles With out Honor Humanity (Total Box Set), generally the Japanese The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset DVD).
This book is simply one of the most beneficial stories I've ever read! In the form of a survival/violent action story, the plot is certainly about studying to make your way in the globe and not becoming afraid to go out there and live. Life can be scary but its worth living.

Battle Royale

In this uncensored and unrated Director's Cut of the cult classic, a group of ninth-grade students from a Japanese high school have been forced by legislation to compete in a Battle Royale. The students are each given a bag with a randomly selected weapon and a few rations of food and water and sent off with three days to kill each other until one survives - or they all die. The story focuses on a few of the students and how they cope. Some, like the psychotic Kiriyama or the hyper-sexual Mistuko, decide to play the game. Others, like Shuya, Noriko, and Kawada, try to find a ways to get off the island without violence. But as the violence increases and the numbers fall, can Shuya and his classmates survive?
