Consumer Critiques

Wow. What a mess. In a superior way. :)
This story is equal parts Battle Royale, Minority Report, and The Running Man. It reads like punk rock--gritty, unflinching, occasionally unpolished, but frenetic and furious and impossible to shut out.
The story centers around Jay and Kyle, a father and son whose family comes apart when Jay is tested for "The Code," the gene that predicts murderous behavior in humans. Jay is whisked off to Murderer City, a spot exactly where other people with The Code can reside together (and die together) under the strict, but indifferent eyes of the military. Kyle ends up on the run, attempting to escape life in a corrupt government foster system. Both father and son eventually obtain themselves wrapped up in a twisted game where the stakes are nothing much less than the future of government policy on genetics, and the future of absolutely everyone bearing The Code is at threat. But are they worth saving? Can they be trusted? Can Kyle trust himself?
It isn't pretty, fellow reader, but it's a train wreck worthy of your wide, unblinking stare. Check it out if you have the stomach--if you have been genetically gifted with the stomach, that is.

Murder Genes is an explosive piece of dystopian fiction. Dystopians tell the opposite tale of a excellent globe, one where society, justice, and and political correctness has grow to be scrambled bum-backwards. In Murder Genes, society has devolved to the point where one's genetic makeup can equal immediate arrest and imprisonment a death sentence for most. For those who get this idea improbable, let me point to the author's fascinating blog that follows the science of genetics and the function it plays in deciding the sentence of criminals in our justice technique, today.
Many reviewers have mentioned the violence in Murder Genes, but let me preface by suggesting that if you liked the book Hunger Games exactly where kids are rewarded for killing each and every other and broadcast live to the planet as entertainment, this novel is only a stone's throw away. Then, if you listen very carefully, someplace in Chapter five the safety switch clicks off and Murder Genes blasts Games out of the kiddie pool to take the location as most riveting, most excruciating, most shocking, most breath-holding.
If you are any sort of standard person, reading Murder Genes will elicit chokes, gasps, and tiny capillary bursting, pushing the envelope concerning what can be regarded as freedom of speech versus criminally punishable. The read is a hell-ride, and appropriate when the reader recovers wits enough to continue reading, the author rewards with a different bowel loosening scene that forces the reader to retreat someplace private to judge the decency of the sort of individual who could in fact read on.
Swallow the self-judgement and muscle on, if you can. Simply because truth of Genes tells a painfully unapologetic moral story exploring the societal consequences of what men and women pick out to think. We humans are lazy creatures by nature. With no impossible obstacles or amazing pain, we rarely rise to our greatest prospective or feel compelled to make the most hard decisions. The reader searching only for a wash of blood-drenched action may perhaps get themselves inadvertently trapped in the ethical crosshairs of their own reality. I suggest that the uncomfortable squirm we really feel watching the characters of Murder Genes struggle in life or death selections only serve to light a fire under some of our personal truths which ordinarily float safely in the sea of inconsequential suggestions.
Conclusion: Those uncomfortable with important thinking must read at their personal risk. Those pawing at the gate, claiming to seek ethical dilemma and lively controversy need to bring a conscience and a night-light. Those squeamish at sight of blood need to stay clear of this book, and tread very carefully in life to make certain to never cut themselves.
Rating: five stars, as a "suggested" read. And a rap across the knuckles for the bastard who ought to have believed himself cocky adequate to tackle the subject matter, but most almost certainly lost a portion of his soul to bring forth this novel.
