Wow. What a mess. In a superior way. :)
This story is equal parts Battle Royale, Minority Report, and The Running Man. It reads like punk rock--gritty, unflinching, occasionally unpolished, but frenetic and furious and impossible to shut out.
The story centers around Jay and Kyle, a father and son whose family comes apart when Jay is tested for "The Code," the gene that predicts murderous behavior in humans. Jay is whisked off to Murderer City, a spot exactly where other people with The Code can reside together (and die together) under the strict, but indifferent eyes of the military. Kyle ends up on the run, attempting to escape life in a corrupt government foster system. Both father and son eventually obtain themselves wrapped up in a twisted game where the stakes are nothing much less than the future of government policy on genetics, and the future of absolutely everyone bearing The Code is at threat. But are they worth saving? Can they be trusted? Can Kyle trust himself?
It isn't pretty, fellow reader, but it's a train wreck worthy of your wide, unblinking stare. Check it out if you have the stomach--if you have been genetically gifted with the stomach, that is.
